The existing space is in the courtyard of a well known restaurant back in the days, which now is an empty building. A protected building with a lot of history in it and around it, it covers a substantial area of courtyard, half of it unused. Being in Bucharest, Romania it is inevitable not to see this kind of abandoned spaces all over the city center, places that in the last couple of years are rethought and opened to the public as beer gardens, event places or cultural spots. What we proposed was an urban garden, a temporary space for cultural events and food market in the weekends and a more craft-beer garden and specialty coffee place during the week days. We proposed a pop-up bar, placing 3 containers on the spot which were equipped in such way that no major change had to be made in them, no mechanical connections or any action that would eventually damage them.
A food trailer , a shade-cover platform for events and different types of furniture and seatings were added. The site conditioned us to a couple of fixed platforms and seatings because of a remaining concrete foundation that we found on the spot and the existing house which we couldn’t get close to it. Being a temporary space we used materials such as corrugated metal and soft wood boards for walls and fixed furniture that would stick to the budget and be easy to dismantle in the end. A layer of gravel was placed for leveling the area and for a walking feeling similar to the beach areas. The space was used during summer time so we wanted to have a summer feeling, with thin lines on the furniture. We proposed and produced chairs, benches, tables and coffee tables.
Spaces like Spatiul M60 are oasis in the city, it seems like a treat every time you discover one and Bucharest has more and more of showing us these places.
