M6 Culture Centre Cafe

Qingdao, China

YEAR
2014
vPPR’s design for M6 Culture Centre in Qingdao, China has been chosen as the winner in the competition for the centre’s social hub.

Located immediately adjacent to the main museum space and currently vacant, the existing building appears to be composed of several structures accrued over time. We are fascinated by the irregular profile and history of the external walls, which we seek to celebrate in our proposal. The labyrinthine interior is re-ordered and two characterful courtyards are retained.

The proposal seeks to clearly contrast old and new materially and formally. It manifests the idea of imprint which refers to the history of M6 as a textile factory. Our concept conveys a coherent strategy which can be applied to different buildings across the site, providing for a consistent approach to the context, while allowing for variations to the form and material.
