With thirty-foot frontage along Portage it was important to maintain the street fabric and push the building to the street the full width of the lot. With a busy streetscape, the project looks to create a strong impact without contributing to the clutter of signage and colour on Portage Avenue. Breaking the skewed street grid the main volume pulls away from the street creating a pocket of space on the western edge, allowing offices to maintain some privacy behind planted vegetation. Pushing back to the street's edge a double height 16' x 16' storefront glazing volume re-aligns itself while creating a canopy of protection over the main entrance. The expanse of glass creates a visual opening breaking through the frontal elevation and allows views into the store. The storefront is treated not as a display case, but rather an extension of the store to the street, while refining the storefront to act as signage and instigator by drawing the busy traffic in.
