The renovation and additions to the Lynnwood Recreation Center have completely redefined the City’s existing facility. The project included a complete renovation with expanded exercise/fitness space and a new leisure pool. Pool amenities include a zero-depth entry, water slides, a lazy river and support facilities. The entry was completely reconfigured with clerestory windows above and a waiting area that overlooks the new leisure pool. Multipurpose rooms, racquetball courts and locker rooms were renovated, with family locker rooms added. Lynnwood’s unique removable roof over the existing pool had been a source of heat loss among other issues for years. It has now been replaced with a permanent, translucent, operable roof system that preserves the pool’s existing structure and its dramatic indoor-outdoor character. The mechanical and electrical systems have been replaced and new insulation installed in the thermal envelope. The project is target to receive LEED silver certification with strategies for water and energy conservation with the pool filtration, HVAC and plumbing systems. Local utilities have offered significant energy incentives as a result of the energy-savings features.NAC|Architecture led the City of Lynnwood through the planning process starting with a feasibility study which involved a facility assessment, several public meetings, evaluation of potential sites, development of program and building options, and a business plan for the proposed concepts. In addition to the work completed, the facility’s master plan includes a future phase with a gymnasium, MAC (multipurpose activity court), elevated walking/jogging track, additional exercise/fitness space, senior center, teen center, art and preschool spaces, multipurpose spaces and support facilities.
