Lyft took 215,000 sf within two parallel, ¼-mile long buildings in San Francisco’s China Basin for their new headquarters—and the design team embarked on a fast-paced, multi-phased effort to knit together a string of disparate spaces to create a unified experience and celebrate the growing company’s culture of fun and discovery.
Inspired by his background in hospitality, Lyft’s CEO has a vision for all Lyft locations to be warm and welcoming with elements of delight and surprise—this begins at reception, where visitors are greeted by a custom-designed LED chandelier featuring 1,021 silver yo-yos that appear to undulate along the ceiling. A series of parklets are woven between open work areas, providing employees with inviting and comfortable retreats for collaboration, concentration, and relaxation. The Speak Easy, an internal lounge and meeting space, is primarily accessed by climbing through a portrait of Willy Wonka.
In a building the length of eleven football fields, clear and graphic wayfinding was crucial. Gradations of pinks, purple, blues, and greens on columns and walls help to identify locations within the buildings, and also mark break areas, elevator lobbies, and other circulation elements. A branded pink hallway leads to a multi-purpose training and event room, dubbed the Banana Room due to the building’s history as a Chiquita and Dole processing plant.
The full-service kitchen provides three gourmet meals a day, and the large all-hands dining/assembly room offers up-close views of the Giants baseball stadium and Third Street Bridge directly across the street.
