An architecture ideas competition entry for a visitor centre in the Unesco heritage site of Lenggong, Perak, Malaysia.
Commendation Prize winner.
The objective of the overall design was to create a scheme that wasn’t overwhelming, but a rather humble collection of buildings that will work together with the existing footprint and structure, undulating terrain and program of spaces.
It was never about the building(s), but about the importance of the Unesco heritage site. Thus the design represented containers or jars of various activities, either for the exhibits or for public use.
Gardens were introduced between these containers to allow
the scheme to ‘breath’ and ‘grow’. The forms of these
containers had to represent archaeological tents, to look as if temporary, light weight and not intimidating. Glue laminated wood was chosen as the main structure for the ‘ribs’ that formed these ‘tents’ or ‘shelters’. Natural sunlight will shine through the gaps between the ribs and illuminate the spaces within; this is filtered light. The roof forms undulate to echo the surrounding
hills and valleys.
The Perak Man is housed in a special portion of the scheme, a representation of a cave. The ‘skin’ is rendered solid and rough to create the cavernous feeling one gets when entering a real cave. This monolithic ‘jar’ is the central piece that anchors the whole scheme to the site. The Perak Man Cave is the heart of the
Lenggong Valley Visitor Centre.
Visitors traverse the hill on ramps made of metal gratings, which allow water to seep and plants to grow from beneath. They might stop at any of the ‘play shelters’ to catch a breath or to participate in mock archaeological digs that children will surely love.
Visitors end the journey at the Tower Café, an attachment created around the existing tower viewing deck. Once a child sees a glimpse of the tower, their parents will definitely be dragged to the top! The view of the surrounding hills and river
from the café will be the final highlight of the overall Lenggong Valley experience.
