MOCA is a blending of the Neon of the Strip and Nature of the Desert. It brings together the spectacular of the show with the hidden oasis’ which require you to look beyond the surface.
Taking from the mountain stratification, the mass begins with a cube of programmatical spaces…lobby, galleries, café, education, offices, and storage separated into various layers of the facility. Shifting along layer lines the spaces are then enabled to create crevices for exploration both within the galleries and outside in the courtyards. Material selection (gabion walls, concrete and steel panels) compliments the layering to reinforce the stratification. The show is created by bringing the art out of the gallery and off the pedestal. Murals and sculpture are interwoven into the courtyards and explodes on the video projection wall. Art is direct and in the face of the community. Art becomes a daily interaction within the public realm.
