Housing project for mining company LKAB. Kiruna city is to be moved because of the expanding mine. As part of this LKAB want to create attractive housing. This area was designed in collaboration with students at higher educations that are important to LKAB and with citizens in Kiruna. The result is a village area below the ski slope with ski-in at every building and direct connection to nature. We developed the plan in three steps.
1) place buildings so that each would have a fall line from the ske slope.
2) Create a square like structure to support the village social space
3) Solve traffic access.
We then engaged 4 architect firms to design a palette of individual buildings. These were placed in the area using 3D modeling in eye height of a person walking. Considerations for views over the lake and mountain range was made in this, placing higher buildings above the lower ones.
