Luminous Passage was selected for the one night only, biennial GLOW art festival in Santa Monica, California. The project was designed over a six month period, installed in three days and experienced during one night. The project is a linear space that links the city to the ocean, extending the existing Bay Street boardwalk to the water's edge. Our intention was to make visible the connection across the sand to the edge of the ocean. This visual land bridge transitions a conceptual leap that moves from the logics that define the city to the those of the ocean. Taking the vertical geometric nature of the city and merging it with the horizontal impulses of the pacific, the project uses tensile cable spans to support and form a visceral, intense space. From the boardwalk, the piece begins with serial vertical lines that gradually twist toward the horizontal. Emerging from the tunnel of glowing lines at the edge of the water, a space is defined akin to the classic California beach campfire - a gathering spot - where the wildness of the ocean is made present in sound and smell.
