Situated on the rooftop of a low-rise structure, the downtown loft encourages meditation. It is an isolated space within an urban area, with the orientation of the walls and the placement of windows organized in a way to maximize sunlight and privacy. Designed to channel sunlight at several angles, capturing bands and slivers of light, along with areas that pool the light. It is a place of simple clarity, with the materials of the building largely wood and glass. There is something important, in my mind, about the intentional undertaking of an individual, to go to a place removed from the norm, in this case by way of a ladder from within the lower building, and then reaching a destination especially prepared for contemplation.
