In 2010, Fort Riley and Geary County USD #475 recognized the need to support the growing number of troops and families moving onto the base. In response, they engaged SJCF Architecture to lead them through programming and design of an 87,000 square foot school.
Seitz Elementary School is designed for nearly 700 Pre-K through 5th grade students. The interior layout was conceived as a series of wings for clusters of similar-age students. Each classroom wing has open collaboration space that is shared between two grades. This is a multi-use space that allows for one-on-one instruction; small and large group instruction; or a place for an entire grade to watch a presentation. Other key spaces in the building include an autism suite for the special needs elementary children on post, a gymnasium designed as a FEMA shelter, two music classrooms, an art/science classroom, a cafeteria and a library/media center.
The building is graceful in form, bright with natural light and flexible in function. Educators, students and parents enjoy a new sense of collaboration within the school’s shared multi-function spaces.
Due to the school’s location on base, it was required to meet both LEED Silver certification for sustainable design and Anti-Terrorism Force Protection (ATFP) standards. A few of the ATFP standards this building meets include:
- Parking lots, drive lanes and trash enclosures maintain a specific minimum distance from any point of the building.
- Windows and window frames were designed for a 3-second duration design loading for blast resistance.
- The building is equipped with an emergency air distribution shut-off button to immediately disable all HVAC systems.
- The building is equipped with a mass notification system tied to Fort Riley.
