To think about one single family house, LSR113 does a perfect story telling of relationship in one family by spatial organization. The sequence and hierarchy of space have been told from the inside to outside, as clearly seen in all places in this house.
Similarly to typical suburban house, LSR113 is located in the great plot of gated community named Lakeside Residence on Bangna-Trat road in Bangkok Thailand. Regarding to the context, this single house follows the same typology that serves for tropical climate. This land plot does not provide only a backyard and a large garden, but it is also attached with the lake. This gives rises for several advantages from waterfront as a complement element.
Although the large area is not difficult to organize due to less determents, however, the scale of large footprint is considered for open-space spatial design. The typical Asian courtyard, traditional Thai or Chinese house, becomes a tool to create space hierarchy. This provides the dramatic scene as the heart of the home. The orientation of each mass also considered the condition of the site. This leads to potential of ventilation for providing better living quality.
Instead of adding use into one large volumn, the house has been designed as 5 interlocking boxes. According to sequence of spaces from front to back, the services, foyer, living and bedrooms respectively. These interlocking masses create the human scale that generates ‘domestic feeling’ for the dweller from interior to exterior. The living space, for instance, the locking space follows the same alignment of the terrace extending the gathering area for family. This is not only a place where family chilling out together, but it is also a welcoming space for all guests by the two courtyards in both sides.
The interlocking masses also give the benefits for shading to protect the sunlight and tropical rain due to the climate. The dimension of extension structure works in the same way as the extension roof in typical Thai house. In terms of material, ‘wood and timber’ is one of material that give a characteristic for this house. The juxtaposition of concrete surface and wood surface gives sense of new oriental modern living style. Additionally, colour of wood has been recognized as a colour of home in general perception, which is what we can find in traditional Thai house.
Undoubtedly, masses, courtyards, material and site condition give rise to a dramatic space inside, especially the relation between living area and sequence courtyards. The change of ceiling height between each area, such as foyer and living room, creates the hierarchy of privacy. At the same time, it gives sense of the perception as story telling by spatial organization. This suggests a visitor to see the possible activities of family members in each particular place. Large windows provide the natural light connecting the living room to main terrace as the extension of living area for occasional party.
The minimal design of interior decoration does help to emphasize the flow space inside quite well. The double height of cabinet stress one side of the wall as the main space. The lower ceiling above the pantry area creates another sequence of activities in the main room. The texture of external façade wraps into the internal area matches the design of furniture.
