The LSE approached ArchitecturePLB with a brief to create a new high-quality entrance for a recently acquired 1970s building, home to flagship research departments. The project involved conversion of a loading bay and two separate undersized entrances. With new frameless glazing and a bold palette of materials the remodeled ground floor is now a vibrant space supporting interaction and collaboration that mixes reception, café, meeting, exhibition and informal learning. A once neglected corner of the campus has been transformed into a dynamic uplifting addition to the LSE estate. The project was a finalist in the Architects’ Journal Retrofit Awards 2013.
