LR Residence emerges as a contemporary interpretation of tropical colonial architecture, where honest materials prevail and a delicate balance between elegance, sobriety, and architectural warmth is achieved. Designed around an open-air living concept, the architecture establishes a continuous relationship between interior and exterior spaces, creating a relaxed spatial experience that promotes tranquility, well-being, and a constant connection with the lush nature of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.
The residence is articulated through a series of interconnected spaces with different uses and atmospheres, centered around the true heart of the project: a central oasis that integrates an infinity pool, SPA area, fitness spaces, BBQ, decks, and outdoor lounges. This central courtyard and pool function as the social and climatic core of the home. In addition to providing privacy from neighboring properties, this strategy visually and physically extends all interior spaces toward gardens and green areas. Large pocket sliding glass doors dissolve the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, allowing the social areas to fully expand into shaded terraces and tropical gardens.
A restrained palette of natural materials defines the identity of the residence. Natural wood cladding wraps ceilings and vertical planes, contrasting with dark volcanic stone walls and delicate steel details. Chukum finishes become a defining feature of both interior and exterior textures, bringing warmth, depth, and an artisanal character that dialogues with the tropical surroundings. The second level projects cantilever above the social areas, creating balconies, deep overhangs, and integrated planters that become key elements of the façade composition. Materials were carefully selected to age gracefully within the coastal climate, reinforcing the authenticity and timeless permanence of the project.
The project does not seek to impose itself radically upon the landscape. Its frontal volumes aim to maintain a low scale and a gradual growth toward the roof ridge, preserving the urban quality and architectural harmony of this emerging neighborhood. The ultimate goal of the proposal is to integrate into its surroundings in a quiet, sensitive, and timeless manner.
One of the main challenges of LR Residence was developing a contemporary architectural proposal within a context regulated by conservative design guidelines. The project carefully responded to the community’s regulations without compromising a clear, authentic, and timeless architectural vision. Rather than confronting these restrictions, the strategy consisted of reinterpreting them through a sensitive, balanced, and highly refined spatial architecture, incorporating subtle references to traditional colonial homes and tropical hacienda residences.
Through sober proportions, honest materiality, and careful integration with the natural surroundings, the residence successfully complies with the established guidelines while proposing a distinctive and contemporary identity. The result is a project that demonstrates how, even within restrictive parameters, it is possible to create architecture that is unique, innovative, and deeply connected to its climatic, cultural, and landscape context.
