The original home on this ½ acre site was a dilapidated mid-century modern box. Over 15 years and 3 additions / remodels, the house was transformed into an icon of modernity rooted in the design aesthetics of the past. Expanding on the original concept of open plan and natural materiality, the design integrates the exterior materials on the interior by bringing the warm wood, rustic concrete, and natural stone inside. Large expanses of steel and glass allow for extensive views of the wooded canyon to highlight the warmth of the materials. The final addition was for the kitchen expansion where a translucent glass roof was utilized to allow for all day illumination in the heart of the home and depending on the time of day, cast shadows on the ceiling of the trees above; an exquisite marriage of inside and out.
