Louver Cottage
This building is located in Chiba prefecture, in Tateyama, which is on the farthest south of Boso peninsula. The site is on a hilly region, with a beautiful view toward the sea at the far. On its back there is a rich green hill. In order to make best use of the view to both the sea and hills, the building arrangement is based on two axis; one extending from the sea to the hills, the other orthogonal to this axis, going straight along the hills.
We designed a buffer zone, a space that connects the inside and the outside. The louver, which can be opened and closed, covers the outer skin of the building. It controls the view and also the amount of direct sunshine coming in. The louvers are also acting like a soft adjustable border between the interior space and the nature. The louvers make shadows on the interior space, changing pattern according to the time of the day. This creates a pleasant space suitable for spending the weekends.
