The former Ancel Home at 35 Estate Drive, Glencoe, IL was designed by nationally renowned architect Edward Dart for Louis and Harriet Ancel in 1961.
Scheduled for demolition as of 2007, the house sat empty for two years and suffered from deferred maintenance. There was a design flaw in the original clerestory sill that led to ongoing water damage on the interior; this was corrected in the renovation.
Other major aspects of the redesign included a new kitchen facing Lake Michigan in the footprint of the 1979 porch addition. Interior materials including the walnut cabinetry and paneling were repaired and refinished. The slate terrace was restored, a new landscape plan implemented. A new ipe deck with stainless guards was constructed at the sound end of the house accessible from the new kitchen.
New roof and flashings were installed. Electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems were upgraded, bathrooms updated, etc.
To supplement the orignal detached garage, an attached two-car garage was added at the southwest corner of the house, set back and deferring to the original structure.
This project was renovated in accordance with the US Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and granted a Certificate of Rehabilitation by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency in 2008.
