Strategically located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the new flagship studio is a hub for HMC Architects’ growing client base—both national and international—to converge, explore, and interact with design teams as their projects develop. Committed to design excellence and sustainability, this LEED certified studio encourages creativity and collaboration, reflecting the 450-person firm’s constantly evolving and progressive identity.
The primary design goal was simple, yet ambitious: to create an architectural design studio where ideas are freely shared and collaboration is paramount. As a working office with more than 50 professionals, the new space had to function on many levels. From individual workstations and collaboration tables, to formal conference and flexible training rooms, the space required highly defined areas that blend together seamlessly.
Against an economical palette of painted drywall, matte and gloss white laminate, and a warm, dark chocolate ground plane, the restrained use of more sophisticated materials seamlessly blend into the landscape. A sculptural woodwork folded plane in rift cut white oak and back-painted low iron glass forms the custom reception desk, setting the tone for finishes throughout the space on Haworth’s Patterns workstations. The entire studio space sits on a five inch raised floor product made of recycled concrete, accommodating power and data in a flexible way while also implying a pedestal upon which design and collaboration occur. An impressive laminated glass wall from the previous tenant’s conference room was retained in the new design solution and provided inspiration for the color palette; the large space beyond was divided to create a new board room and training room. Quartered walnut contrasts with gloss white laminate millwork and white tackable wall panels; a textural tone-on-tone carpet detail mimics the notched and layered ceiling plane, above.
