Interstitial space between two academic buildings that were constructed at different times. The existing space was dimly lit, outfitted with finishes from the 1970's and primarily used as a pedestrian way to get from one part of campus to another. It was the client's desire to create a destination space with food service and lounge amenities. The design response included capturing some first floor space from one of the academic buildings and the removal of a circular concrete stair from the space. The existing wood panel finish was removed from the 3-story walls and balconies. A new structural steel stair was incorporated along with glass handrails and guardrails, and the finishes and colors were updated to create an environment conducive to gathering, dining and studying.
