'A New Landmark for Aldgate' COMPETITION ENTRY
Contemporary Expression of AldgateBy the people, For the people, Of the people
Dimension 450mm x 450mm x 450mm of cube is considered as a basic unit. one single unit itself performs as a seating, pot, and lighting. And, when it grows and make clusters, new function will be introduced. London cube is not a rigid and fixed structure, It can be transformed by the people for their use. (private party,outdoor cinema). And, in case of world event or convention, cubes can be organized for a statue which is thetallest combination. London tour information center, exhibition space, and outdoor cinema are possible scenario when people reorganize cubes.This project aims to change the perception of ‘Gate’. What the Aldgate site’s desire is not a revival or a reshaping of old gate. London cube is a platform rather than a gate. It is not where people pass by, but wherepeople stay, experience and get informations.
SustainabilitySince London cube is an outdoor installation,it should have its own energy supplier without cable. Traffic island which is the furthest from the surrounding buidlngs(least shading) allows London cube to receive maximum solar radiation in daytime. Some of cubes have solar pannel on top. This pannel generate enough energy for LED inside of cube. When it is fully charged it can last 3 days. (same specifiation with street light)
StructureRadius 12.5mm hole will be installed on the ground with 450mm x 450m grid. Each cube is designed to plug into those holes. And, each cube can pulg onto another cube. Load will be transferred through vertical members. Total 300 cubes are being used for various combinations. Moreover,Some of cube units can be donated by private company under the condition that they can advertise their product inside of cubes. and some can be donated by those who want to have time capsule inside of cube.
