In Taiwan, nearly 70% of existing warehouse is illegal. Most of the logistics operators are forced to store their goods in shabby buildings under high risks. Recent years, the trend of on-line shopping is booming worldwide and so is Taiwan. That phenomenon entitles the industry a wonderful opportunity to change the whole condition. Our client, Ally Logistic Property (ALP), established in 2013, decided to do something big to challenge the industry’s tradition by carrying out a logistics park with their radical ideas. This project is part of the very first in the master plan, a specialist warehouse for wine storage.
The site is located in the outskirt of Taipei City, surrounded by beautiful mountainous environment. That reminds us the significance how the building should interact with it. The first topic to deal with, is how to respond the unspoiled nature with lowest impact. Moreover, what else could we do architecturally to look after warehouse worker's well-being and create a walking-friendly environment. We believe happy working space will bring good performance.
So a series of push and pull is taken to reshape the rigid box. Arcade and corridor are created and stick-out boxes suggest the alternative usage of internal space. We strengthen the building’s entrance to rebuild the value of people in warehouse typology and that only takes tiny sacrifice of storage efficiency to achieve. Who says warehouses are only a place to store goods or only generated by a mathematic layout? There are lots more to do. It can be not only a great work space but also a venue for company events. More importantly, it can be playful.
To fit in the nature, we use color and material texture to soften the building impact. The yellow and grey stripes goes along with the curvy wooden corner, three boxes and a terrace embedded in the building structure highlight the potential of people behavior. We expect those features would trigger diverse activities and turn the mono-functional into a place encouraging creativity.
