Log 39 confronts both a changed political landscape and an evolving urban environment, offering reflections on architecture and the contemporary city both in America and on the international stage. The Winter 2017 issue features a series of incisive essays by critics and historians on recently completed architecture – from BIG’s VIA 57 West and WORKac’s 93 Reade Street in New York to Herzog & de Meuron’s Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg to Archi-Depot, a new museum dedicated to architecture models in Tokyo – and a timely reflection on the history and future of OMA’s 1989 Euralille masterplan. It also presents an essay considering the validity of an aesthetics of indifference by Michael Meredith, a chapter exploring architecture’s forays in digital collage and “dirty realism” from Jesús Vassallo’s new book Seamless, and a work of pseudo-scripture by Eric Owen Moss. Also included are 13 short pieces on the implications of Donald J. Trump’s election as president of the United States for architecture and infrastructure from a diverse group of practitioners, critics, and activists, as well as longer contributions on tangential themes including the spatiality of the US-Mexico border and the vibrancy of architecture culture in Ljubljana during the 20th century.
