The objective was to design a living space for one of the main characters in the movie "Peaceful Warrior". The chosen character for my project was Socrates, who's a man in his sixties that works in a Gas Station. He thinks the purpose in life is to serve and help other people, to share knowledge and wisdom. He doesn't care for material possessions, he lives with little, and doesn't appear to have a lot of money. If he does, he doesn't show it during any scene in the movie. The Concept:I decided to start the designing process by choosing a concept, and then develop on top of it. I chose the Jigsaw Puzzle as my main idea. I based it on the fact that Socrates believes that our lives are made up by all the experiences we go through throughout our lives Every experience is a little piece that, in the end, forms the big picture, our legacy, our entire lives essentially summarized in one picture, with everything we went through. The good and bad things, each and every one of our choices. Everything. I worked the jigsaw puzzle concept with the different materials I used to build the loft. Mainly there's Concrete, Glass, Corrugated Metal, Steel, and Bricks. All these materials represent the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle, as if the loft wasn't built in just one period of his life. As if he built it throughout his life, and the materials used reflect his state of mind at that time. Implantation:The loft is located on the suburbs of Las Vegas, mainly because it's known as the Sin City, where everything happens. And as Socrates has the need to help others, I decided it was a great place for him to find a lot of people in need for help, greedy and selfish people, that only think about the money and appearances. Socrates could help them from where he was.Required Spaces:On the ground floor, I planned a workshop, as the loft is near a gas station, I figured it was necessary. It works as an transition space, from his personal space to the public space. First Floor: Living Room/Study, where he could watch the city on the horizon, and look for the right person to help next. He could also use this space to socialize with the person he is currently helping. Double-height windows fit perfectly here.Dining Room, consists of a table and four chairs, nothing special.Kitchen, as he doesn't appear cooking, it's not an ultra-modern kitchen, but it has the basic stuff.Second Floor:Suite, where he can also sit and look at the city on the horizon, there's also a bed and dresser, and a bathroom on the other side.
