STRATEGIC SITE OF SIMRISHAMN : KEYS OF THE PROPOSALA_ NEW IDENTITY FOR THE PORT : The local identity is enhanced by choosing and highlighting the existing qualities through the creation of urban generators. The development in the port uses a thematic parcours, valorizing the existing visual axes. Circulation is restricted to bicycles and pedestrians. Cars are allowed to pass only temporarily for the needs of boat owners. 01 : MARKET > Pavilions made of wooden structure and glass and an open-air plaza can host a multitude of uses, such as markets (fruits, fish, flowers), christmas bazaar etc. When they are not used as markets, they can be used as rest areas during the promenade. 02 : FOOD > Tradition in gastronomy and a support to the local products is enhanced through the creation of a restaurant with greenhouse, where the restaurant’s raw material is cultivated.03 : WIND > Wind is essential for sailing and also a symbol of new sustainable energy sources. In this garden, the landscape is formed with plants receptive to wind and a wind-sculpture open air installation.04 : SAILING : PAVILLION PEAK of PROMENADE > The pavilion is devoted to sailing promotion, courses, workshops. The amphitheatre frames the view to the entrance of the port. In this garden, we can find a water area, whose function changes during the seasons and the condition of the water ( fountain or ice-rink).B _DWELLINGS > The new housing complex next to the river and as an extension to the city is reinterpreting the qualities of the city of Simrishamn01:DENSE URBAN SCHEME IN THE EXISTING FABRIC OF SIMRISHAMN > The density, the proportions between open space and buildings, as well as the continuous front towards the street are qualities that give Simrishamn its identity.02:EXISTING VEGETATION > The site proposed for residential use has many trees. One of the main concerns is to respect the existing vegetation and develop the housing units in harmony with the environment. The river is equally important as it dictates a landscaping in respect to its flooding. The ground floor of the houses is thus elevated to +3.50 m.03:ORGANIC DEVELOPMENT towards an ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE > The complexity of the structure is developed according to the solar orientation. The surface of north facades is maximized, by rotation of the housing front and a respective increase in heights. The housing complex follows the enclosed organic pattern of the existing city center in order to form spaces protected from the wind.04:SPATIAL TRANSITIONS / FROM PRIVATE TO PUBLIC > The complex handles qualities that offer a transition from private to public spaces. Each housing unit is developed on a space articulation that consists of closed private space of the house, a wintergarden, open air spaces such as balconies or private courtyard. A courtyard inside the core of each “cell” is designed for use among the residents. This common space promotes the socialization and contributes to the formation of a neighborhood. Different types of vegetation, urban cultivations, resting spaces and playgrounds are among the equipment. Parking spaces for the needs of the residents are incorporated into the pattern on the ground level, organised in zones between the courtyards.05:TYPES OF RESIDENTS - DIVERSIFICATION of PROPERTYTen different typologies are found among the housing units, varying in area and floors. The type of residents is expected to vary also: from all year residents to people owning a summer house or people visiting for tourism.C_ GREEN BELT - RIVER > In order to provide a new river front, the tree-zone is enriched and prolonged. The landscaping formation of a river-side walk unifies the allotment gardens, the residential and institutional buildings, the new housing development. The green belt finally penetrates the port.
