The fundamental design goal for the Loblaw Companies headquarters building was the creation of a facility focused on strengthening a sense of community and supporting human comfort. The solution is a four storey building with large open floor plates surrounding a central atrium that contains the common lunch area; the symbolic and real gathering place of the building. Natural daylighting provides energy savings and a more comfortable work environment achieved through a perfectly aligned solar orientation, floor to ceiling glazing, exterior sunshading for glare control and interior automated light shelves that direct sunlight deep into the building. Operable windows support natural ventilation and provide the opportunity for personal control of the workspace. The result is an advanced office which is a measurably better environment for its occupants.Design
