LMR CLINIC
Although very limited by the original structure of the existing clinic, that we naturally had to respect, we tried to create a pleasant and coherent atmosphere able to respond to the service demands.
With a square plan located on the first floor of a pre-existing building, the original space was characterized by a central volume integrating the bathroom, a changing room and a storage space. Placed against the borders we had the offices. By a question of logistic and infrastructural issues, all of this areas were left in their original place.
The external layer together with the central volume formed a featureless corridor abruptly discontinued by an attendance room that, by the space necessity “stole” a good part of the corridor. It became obvious to us that it had to be absorbed by the external layer of offices.
Thus, strongly limited by the original spatial distribution, and by an overcrowded space, our intervention was highly focused on attributing a coherent and strong image, and restore the space fluidity in the most comfortable and harmonious way possible.
Channeled by the “donut” organization, and in order to grant coherence between architecture and it´s function, we´ve used the curve has the main theme. Only through the use of the curve, we thought, could we grant the necessary space fluidity and connect spaces in a natural way, so natural as the human body, taking advantage of all the available spaces e transforming it in an interconnected and organic element.
The corridor molds itself three times, creating three distinct functions, the reception, a common waiting room and a private waiting room.
All of them independent but coexisting as one, and the three of them consciously placed in order to destroy this sensation of corridor space that we´ve inherited form the original project.
As aggregation and spatial comfort generator elements we´ve used besides the curve, three other elements. The curtain, artificial light and color.
The curtains, swept by lines of artificial light mix the walls cream background color with the subtle shades of the fabric texture, spreading a warm light that grants a sensation of peace and comfort.
Later, we were very glad to visit the space and realize that people adopt a posture of calmness and tranquility, naturally lowering their tone.
In the offices, we´ve covered some walls with mirrors, not only by functional reasons but also and mainly to create a sensation of a wider space. The mirrors reflect and give continuity to the curtains (with antifungal treatment) that grant privacy and break the exterior light spreading a very uniform light to the space, ideal for working.
In the surgery room we kept the warm colors and the curtains so that it would look less as a surgery room and more like a house division, trying to mitigate the natural stress associated with the surgery.
