Acquario Comunale "Diacinto Cestoni" [a.k.a. "Diacinto Cestoni" Communal Aquarium]
The Marine Aquarium of
the Mediterranean was named for the great naturalist Diacinto Cestoni,
who died in 1718 at Livorno, the city in which he had opened a
pharmacy. The building, extensively remodeled for the inauguration
(June 20, 1937), had been previously occupied by a heliotherapy center.
Destroyed by bombing in 1943, it was rebuilt in 1950.
The aquarium tanks
contain animal and plant species typical of the Mediterranean waters.
Between the early 1950s and the 80s, Mauro Sordi, long-time Director of
the Aquarium, formed a collection, today named for him, consisting of
showcases with prepared specimens of invertebrates and glass bottles
containing various products. PROPOSED DESIGN (1994): A series of gabbled metal roof structures were to create a pavilion of structures that would cover gradually deepening tanks as the visitor moved outward toward the sea. The sequence ends as one has descended below the sea level and into a aqua-comb (A Catacomb beneath the sea)A new esplanade entered through a separate entrance to create a viewing platform on top of a break water creates a protected harbor and vantage point to view the regattas in the harbor. The aquarium is now undergoing remodeling and enlargement.
