Living Smart: Big Ideas for Small Lots (competition)

A composition of volumes, contextually respectful in scale and
mass, is derived from programmatic elements and stretched to outdoor rooms,
advantaging interstitial space between dwellings - a deck is anchored by a
masonry hearth; a water garden reflects sun onto and through glazing; a second
floor terrace overlooks the neighborhood; and a field stone paved container
garden provides a private refuge.
Rich, natural materials give interest to simple forms - cedar
clapboard and an enveloping shake roof complement a skin of standing seam zinc
in their complex patinas; expansive glass (treated to obscure sight lines to
the interior) provides daylight without compromising privacy and returns a warm
glow at night as an indicator of inhabitation; slate, naturally modeled and
varied, lends visual interest to the street facing
garage facade.
The
house is flexible to provide accommodation for a variety of lifestyles, yet
taught with “servant” spaces tightly organized behind a wrapper of casework.
