The Living Lab 1702 project began in Spring 2009 as an interdisciplinary studio course focused on sustainability. The goal: to challenge the students understanding of green design in order to articulate a progressive vision for a new approach to dorm life and urban lifestyle while reducing the carbon footprint. The students and faculty designed all of the furniture and products within the space based on a careful analysis of how students were using existing dorm rooms. The suite includes a kitchen, bathroom, and living area renovated using the core tenets of sustainable design: reinvent, reuse, recycle, and reduce. The materials selected are environmentally friendly and locally sourced. Some highlighted features include energy control systems which allow one turn off all power to the room, outlets that can be switched off to catch vampire loads, new lighting with LED and fluorescent fixtures only, resurfaced cabinets, and new furniture designs built from existing dorm furniture. The Living Lab is ready to be monitored and analyzed so the team can gain information for future green dormitory renovations on campus. This Lab is a model example of Pratt's commitment to innovate & demonstrate a sustainable lifestyle. Pratt Institute signed up as a 2030 Challenge Partner to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2017.Credits for the Project: Instructors: Robert Langhorn, Julie Torres Moskovitz, Corey Yurkovich.
