Living Classrooms is a Baltimore/Washington area non-profit educational organization which provides specialtty training and tutoring to underprivileged students of all ages. In this design studio, we had a unique opportunity to work directly with Living Classrooms to help explore design ideas for their new Washington headquarters to be located on the Anacostia River.
The final proposal engages the waterfront by extending the iconic multi-purpose room out to the water’s edge and simultaneously engages the public promenade which passes both under and through the building. After the optimal program packing structure was determined using rhinoscript, the classroom facilities were located on the upper level so that public interaction would not disturb the primary function of the building as an educational center. On the lower level, a coffee shop and gallery provide additional revenue for Living Classrooms. Patrons are encouraged to relax under the sculptural awning that provides both shelter and an increased sense of community. The composition is tied together by a central atrium which provides natural light for the center of the building as well as a common area for student interaction.
