At the plan of the design, we imagined the light running through the depth of the space. We hoped the wind and the light could penetrate the whole house and let the sunshine illuminate all the corner indoors. So we arranged and combined four squares which represent the four main living scenes. We left the aisle for the wind and light between the squares. It not only makes the light could go deep into the core of the house, but also create the continuity of space.
The four spaces refer to the four individuals of this house. There is some intimate distance among them and also have the core that binds them together. So we place a void space in the middle to south of the four squares. It can be the links of the upper and lower floor, and also be the horizontal direction of the connection.
The core space has a huge window facing to the south courtyard. It can make the space filled with sunshine. And it owns the Southwest monsoon which has been cool down in the courtyard in the summer. At the first floor, the core space connects the living room, kitchen, dining room and the aisle to the east back door and the west gate and entrance. People can walk from the core space through the stairs to the study room on the north side of the second floor. The hot air will emission through the skylight above the study room and it would keep the interior cool.
Following the concept of these four squares and aisles, the appearance of the house is make up of blocks and gaps. The entrance is face to the west side and is slightly retracted, in order to avoid the affecting made by the strong northerly winds in winter to the opening door. The window above the door and the void inside the door make the light can run through to the core space in the afternoon. When the night comes, the indoor light will reflect the warm atmosphere of home.
Besides the gaps, most of the windows are in the shape of rectangle. It can make the house look much slimmer. Windows on the north side can achieve moderate light. On the other hand, so as not to let the western exposure make it uncomfortable while indoors, windows on the west side are reduced as much as possible, or covered by grille.
