By developing a phased plan, we are helping the congregation prioritize their critical facility needs first, and matching project scope to fundraising ability. The overall plan will culminate in the construction of a new sanctuary space. The master planning process has included:• Meetings with over 100 congregational representatives.• Analysis of existing building capacity and conditions.• Attendance at worship services and events.• Renderings and diagrams for congregation and neighborhood gatherings. In Phase I, the design provides the congregation with a new lobby and entry hall, providing the enhanced visual identity that was lacking in the existing building. The 25,600 square foot expansion also provides classroom, day-care, teen-age gathering space, and a children’s theatre/performance space. In order to keep within the extremely tight budget, the design team chose basic materials, carefully placing particular attention to the overall palette to create a distinctive design which provides the visibility and warmth the project demanded. The team’s restrain to not overdesign but focus on key elements of the building’s exterior and entry/lobby allowed for impactful design to be created. The second level, teenage gathering space, flows above the main floor. It is wrapped in a skin that is constructed of flat-seam 18-gauge pre-finished steel panels. Selectively placed rectangular openings allows for natural light to filter into the space but also creates a sophisticated design element onto the wrapped wall allowing for a softer not so harsh ‘box’ feel.
