The project consisted of the renovation of the auditorium of the Little Theater, located in Carnesecca Arena in St. John’s University Queens Campus. This 408-seat theater was in need of significant interior renovations and upgrades with the intention of creating a more functional, contemporary, vibrant and welcoming environment. The phased project had to accommodate multiple venue functions including: theater, dance, music, movie screenings, speaking engagements and student orientation activities. The scope of work ranged from HVAC upgrade, ADA compliance issues, audio and video upgrade, new seating and lighting and infrastructure provisions for future program needs.
The redesign of the auditorium resulted in a close marriage of design and function. The three undulating curves that make-up the ceiling look like luminous ribbons, while hiding the lighting equipment for the stage and auditorium and drastically improving the theater’s acoustics. The ceiling mimics the terraced seating reinforcing the direction of the theater and helping to focus the audiences’ attention to the stage. Throughout the dynamic space there is a contrast of light and dark, which is highlighted by the newly installed red seats— St. John University’s color.
Every element of the redesign was selected to improve the performance of the theater as a whole and to elevate the audiences’ experience in the space.
