This home is a typical detached property recently built mimicking the traditional Edwardian houses next door in the heart of Kew conservation area close to botanical gardens. however, the building lacked the detail and craftsmanship you would expect when asked to design a home within a historical vicinity. the dormers were set to high to deny the owner view of the garden, the main staircase opposite the entrance hall appeared dark, several level changes within the house have been set to give impression of a care home.
We worked with the owners to fundamentally improve the flow through the house and added a large extension to the rear allowing for a spacious living area, with kitchen at upper level leading via steps down to the dining area.
The existing basement- a mess with low ceilings and bad waterproofing- has been extended to the back, with higher ceilings, a separate guest bedroom, which through moving walls can be used as a study or lounge, a second kitchen and little utility where the owner stores his valuable fly fishing equipment. the upper bedrooms are more practical designed, with ample storage and spacious bathrooms- all connecting to the new stairway which winds along an all glass skin all the way down to the basement. a clever mix of styles – new York loft meeting philip stark – give the owners their feel of city life in their own home. It has been along journey, with many difficulties to overcome. we became friends over all.
