Founded in 1955 by Jeanne M Simons, considered one of the pioneers in the field of autism, the Linwood School provides education and housing for children and adults with autism spectrum disorder. The project, located immediately adjacent to Linwood's current historic mansion, required a design that would not overpower the mansion and gain approval from the Ellicott City Historic commission panel. Our design sinks a two story building into the hill in front of the mansion giving it a one story appearance while taking advantage of the hillside slope to allow for natural light and views into all major spaces. The school includes a half court gym, classrooms, kitchen and dining facilities and occupational and living/ learning areas. Also included are speech and language therapy rooms, conference room and administrative areas. The building uses modern materials of the same coloration as the historic building to complement the architecture while providing a state of the art new facility.
