The project brief asked for wide variety of programs such as a cultural centre, retail, gastronomy, housing, offices and parking facilities in the centre of a quaint Austrian city next to the river Inn. Our proposal stems from the ambition to develop the new volumes as connectors between disparate parts of the city. The building starts as the extension of a new artificial landscape next to the river and forms a bridge over a street that dissects the site. It then turns into a passage through a restructured shopping centre before merging with one of the main city squares.
This results in a morphology that hybridises the various programs and fosters rich relationships between them as well as with the external conditions.
Fusing with the landscaped riverfront, the building extends to form a bridge. Beneath is the access to a theatre, cafe and meeting facilities. The bridge leads to a public passage through a proposed department store, connecting the river with the central area of Kufstein.
