The extension design takes advantage of the sloping site to maximum usage of space, whilst maintaining the original building and streetscape. With two-storeys high at one end, reducing to single-storey at the rear, the extension embraces a double volume living space providing a focal point for family gatherings.
To respond to the client’s brief, a simple boxed extension is inserted at the rear to cater for three generations of family living. The original house has been renovated for the older generation, whilst the extension comprises a zone for the client, a zone for the younger generation, and a zone for all to gather.
Concrete colour exterior has been chosen for the simple boxed extension so it can blend into its surrounds as the garden matures. The design of the interior is also kept simple with concrete colour interior finish. However, a double volume living area with a link-bridge through mid-air, and an extra wide stairway, adds dramatic features to the heart of the extension. The link-bridge is cladded with timber battens to bring warmth to the central family space. Similar timber batten feature is also used in the original house as a marriage of the past and the present. Comfort and sustainable living are also a priority with high level insulations, heated floor slabs and solar panels installed, the future is covered as well.
