The Lindacrest Residence presented a unique design challenge. The site is narrow at the street frontage and tapers outward as it descends a steep hillside overlooking Beverly Hills. Restrictions on buildable area for such a property are prohibitive to growing families, and therefore finding a design solution to overcome this obstacle was primary to meeting the needs of our client. Exercises in generating potential spatial configurations on the site showed a necessary verticality in the massing of the home. Taking into consideration the needs of our client and the conditions of the site, our design process led us to a strategy of volumetric shifting of the spaces at each level. That decision simultaneously allowed for the expansion of interior spaces and the recapturing of usable exterior space, which had once been steep hillside. This allows for each level of the house to have unique exterior space which extends interior spaces outward to city and canyon vistas.
