Located in the Pacific Palisades, the house is situated on a hillside lot with expansive ocean views from all levels, this project includes a remodel of an existing 2 story residence with the lower level more of a basement than a true second story. Our charge was to rectify the lack of connection to the exterior for living and views, the lack of natural daylight, poor existing circulation, and to affect the existing lower level to result in a true story rather than a perceived basement.
The circulation was revised to a direct horizontal path from the front to rear of the home at the second floor, intersecting with a vertical circulation core connecting the 3 floors and drawing light down into the heart of the home to all levels. Wood wrapped stairs with a stacked block aesthetic wind up through the light shaft.
Exterior living spaces are provided flanking each floor offering expanded indoor outdoor living areas. The existing first floor was lowered to provide direct connection to the rear yard and to offer more appropriate ceiling height and fill the bedrooms with natural daylight. Living and dining spaces at the second level (entry) are flanked a deck suited for dining or relaxation.
A third floor was added which consists of a Master Suite and Lounge and a substantial rooftop deck serving the floor. Privacy for the bedroom can be accommodated via an integrated sliding door when desired.
Wood screening and cladding accentuate the exterior, provide shelter and shading.
