Capo Murro di Porco, the lighthouse surrounding area, is a place dominated by the sea and wind, where the man-made syracusan landscape gives away to wild and harsh nature. The proposed project aims to treat this place identity and nature with the utmost respect.
The goal is not to transform the site into an exclusive place, but enrich it “temporarily” with respectful gestures that tap into local natural and landscape features (vegetation, dry stone walls, climate), archaeological and historical presence (Greek and Roman ruins, abandoned military posts along the coast, Mainace Castle, Ortigia Market, etc.), local representative materials (as the white Siracusa stone).
Reaching an alternate state of mind, the visitors are offered an experience, concentrating on main qualities of this place: light, water, sound and views. A pure, austere landscape made of Mediterranean maquis, rocks, sea and wind.
The general intervention is made by different design processes: the existing buildings restoration; a light net of pathways from the main current path; a series of platforms between lighthouse and the cliff; the new “semi-permanent”huts made by a deck (permanent), a corten contemplation pavilion (semi-permanent) and a marine plywood hut where the visitors can “living” in landscape, in complete contemplation and relaxation.
Each of these modules, spread out in landscape along the coast, has the privilege of view to the sea, invoking the “infinity” concept like the lighthouse light, as the De Chirico’s “Nostalgia of Infinite” where he creates a sense of detachment from reality.
The purpose of this project is that the architecture should be “time - limited”, today’s is accessible and liveable, but tomorrow it could disappear leaving few traces in the landscape that would return to a wild nature.
