The Light Tower has a symbolic value to Eindhoven. Therefore it was important to do not change the structure of identity, but to strengthen this function correctly and increase. It was important to strike the right tone, to conform to the way it has always been. Sober with respect, almost as a tribute.
The existing building had due to its columnar structure on a grid of 7.2 to 7.2 meters, because of its construction depth of about 21.6 meters and are floor height of 4.5 meter a high degree of flexibility. However, the position of the vertical outcrops inhibitory worked on this flexibility. By modifying and adding a new system of stairways and lifts up new opportunities for rezoning. The monolithic concrete structure (Hennebique system) was visualized and repaired where necessary.
The white concrete facades determine the facade. The closed parapets on the ground floors have been reduced or interrupted for new accesses. The building thus becomes more accessible and more transparent, both from inside to outside and vice versa. The existing windows were replaced by a new interpretation, thermal and acoustic insulating glazing where necessary, with a distribution based on the original windows.
All new additions - the volume of the Mathildelaan, the new volume on the side of Light Square Emmasingel - are equipped with the same tectonics, with the same facade treatment. The reason for the addition or replacement is deliberate; the revitalization of blank walls (end wall adjacent to the Light Square / the inner part of EC), improving the vertical circulation to optimize (expand) the construction volume. All this is accompanied by or result in a renewed urban anchoring of the Light Tower in its surroundings.
On the one hand opted for glass facades. The facade finishing in tempered glass fixed to the concrete structure without frames or styles. On the other hand opted for masonry facades with deep negge. The East Friesian (D) Wittmunder hand-sorted by brick creates all kinds of variations in structure for a non-massive, glittering image.
Positioned where urban sound, a new building on the grounds placed before the Lichttoren. This brick building is brought into use as doctors and residential hotel. Centrally located between the hotel and the Lichttoren has resulted in a lobby which forms the entrance to all activities of the hotel. This foyer is designed as a lightweight, transparent structure of steel and glass. The space opens gradually upward between the buildings in order to preserve as much daylight as possible. Seen from the 18 September Square remains the Light Tower, even before listed building visible.
The spaces are provided at the hotel by a span of 7.2 meters and ceiling height of approximately 3.3 meters. The rooms of the hotel are placed on either side of an atrium in which the vertical and horizontal access is provided. The hotel is in the same tectonics and materialization as the new additions to the side of Light Square Emmasingel performed.
