Project in collaboration with Andy Yu, Ciril Verna and Robert VolzThe exercise is very clear, in both program and time frame, 2 weeks. The program comprises a Light House, integrated research center and a helipad, to be built on the shallowest surface of the Svenska Björn, a sunken rock in the Baltic Sea, with an intervention diameter of 10 meters. We aimed at a balance between a fast and uncomplicated construction and the promotion of a new icon for navigation and Architecture alike. Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) is the leading material for the project, meansto a fast build up and image of a solid and resilient form. Inspired from the structures of Felix Candela and Eladio Dieste, the shape is challenging. The concrete element is seen as a sheet, folded into shape as to obtainminimum thickness while retaining maximum structural stability. The outline of the base is extruded and inverted as it travels upwards. Garanteeing that the sides are strictly vertical, we created a thin sheet of concrete with a collumn like stability. The load is fully supported by a single element on one of the sides of the monolith, and the floor slabs arecantilevered from it. The other side is a composite perforated lightweight façade, shedding its inner light onto the outside. This façade can be removed with no structural interference, thus allowing new programmatic possibilities without need to put the whole structure down.
