Seven tram stops forming part of Karlsruhe’s inner city transportation network are being relocated underground. In accordance with the structural specifications, each station will have its own individual character. However, due to a consistent, simple and clear design throughout, they are nevertheless related. The enclosed underground space functions as a quiet contrast to the busy pedestrian precinct above with all its optical and acoustic stimuli. From a design point of view, the stops can be divided into two space categories: In the transfer zone the stairways and intermediate concourses show the building construction without encasings. The waiting zones with the soft transitions and homogeneous, light surfaces have an almost meditative character.
