The design of Light House explores the idea of a post-covid, multi-generational home suited for the tropics.
The bungalow is designed for a closely-knitted family who was been residing on the plot for decades. Changing needs of the growing family and the pandemic has prompted the family to redevelop their home in order to better suit their contemporary lifestyles & individual needs.
Designing spaces for flexibility and recreational activities such as hosting, swimming and
music was as important as the incorporation of green spaces in the home.
Located at eastern part of Singapore, the abode features spaces of various scales for larger family gathering, intimate entertainment room for hosting of smaller groups, as well as home office and kids playrooms. Lush landscaping at 1st storey gives a welcoming sense of serenity and arrival. Pockets of greenery on balconies & roof terraces were distributed throughout the upper storeys. This serves to connects one with the environment and allow for a myriad of outdoor activities.
Contextual factors and qualities of the site plays a key role in shaping the architectural design. Located in close proximity to a busy road junction, the architectural design tries to ‘shield’ the interiors of the home from the noise & dust, whilst opening up & embracing the views towards the adjacent green field.
Passive design strategies were incorporated from early design inception. Large windows and openings were strategically located to open to prevailing wind directions. The result
of which is a house that breathes and is infused with naturally daylighting. Lap pool helps to lower temperature of the house through evaporative cooling. Solar panels provides a sustainable source of energy for the family.
Beyond the functional requirements, we’re glad to be able to craft a new identity for the home through the design, imbuing it with a sense of understated elegance.
