The LICCA Planning+Wayfinding project uses a system of physical directional devices that stake out territory and establish a graphic identity for the community’s nascent cultural district. The project aims to create an iconic image that will become the symbol of Long Island City culture, immediately legible and memorable to local residents and visitors alike. The wayfinding structures bear maps and signage at scales legible to both motorists and pedestrians that clearly communicate the locations of the institutions and directions on how to best get to them—on foot, by car, bicycle, bus, and subway. They will also house interchangeable signage and display boards to provide information about specific institutions, exhibitions, performances, and events. An important part of the project is selecting optimal sites for the structures throughout Long Island City—which has nearly 500 city blocks and an area of 1,664 acres—and establishing a plan for their phased construction as funding becomes available.Design Team: Lyn Rice, Astrid Lipka, Benjamin Cadena, Steven Chen
