Appointed in May 2008, ADP undertook a two stage refurbishment of the University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) central library. The transformation of the existing facility into a new state-of-the-art social learning centre and library involving full interior design services, signage, graphics and furniture.
The two phases of the project were ambitious, requiring the first phase – a refurbishment of the ground floor – to be completed in a sixteen week window over the summer break in 2008.
The first phase involved creating an open-plan social learning space on the ground floor of the library building. Through extensive consultation with the Department of Learning, students and staff, ADP’s designs for the new library accommodates a range of learning styles, meeting the needs of today’s student population.
The library now has new self check-in technology and will operate as a twenty-four hour facility, supporting students with late night working patterns, and in particular aiding the learning culture of international students.
The second phase of the project was equally ambitious as it involved the wholesale refurbishment of the first and second floors, including a new mechanical and electrical servicing strategy - all to be completed within the sixteen week period of the University’s 2009 summer break.
The building was nominated for The Sunday Times Award for ‘Best Places to Work in the Public Sector".
