DESIGNED TO EXPAND
AND REMODEL THE CURRENT PUBLIC LIBRARY IN HAFNARFJARDAR,
ICELAND, THIS
PROJECT TRIES TO BECOME AN IMPORTANT CITY LANDMARK. THE PROPOSED DESIGN ADHERES
TO THE ESTABLISHED PROGRAM WHICH REQUIRED EXPANDING THE LIBRARY FROM 1000 TO
OVER 3000 SQUARE METERS, PROVIDING A WIDE VARIETY OF NEW SERVICES LIKE: CAFETERIA,
DIGITAL INFORMATION ROOM, ARCHIVED COLLECTION, MUSIC LIBRARY AND CLASSROOMS.
THE DESIGN RESCUES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE FROM THE EXISTENT LIBRARY, AND ENVELOPS
IT WITH TWO NEW SKINS. THE PROJECT INTEGRATES THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY,
FRAMING VIEWS OF THE TOWN AND THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD, AND ATTRACTS THE
SOCIETY TO ENGAGE IN PUBLIC ACTIVITIES LIKE MOVIE SCREENINGS AT THE PARK. THE
LIBRARY MAKES ALLUSION TO THE CITY?S PORTUAIRE HISTORY, WITH ITS TRANSLUCENT
WALLS THAT ILLUMINATE THE CITY AT NIGHT AND ALLOW PANORAMIC VIEWS LIKE A LIGHTHOUSE DOES- WHICH IS THE TOWN?S
OFFICIAL ICON.
