The library 2.0 was a master thesis project, at the Technical University of Vienna and is based on a competition from AWR.
The project deals with a modern and new concept of a library, in the context of new workspaces, technologies and media devices as well as their impact on architectural spaces.
The site is situated in the center of Copenhagen at the waterside, opposite of the National Opera and next to the Palace Amalienborg.
The main achievement of the design was to find a way to include the functions of exciting libraries and the change of sources, from print media to digital media, with new technologies. A modern library has to adopt to all this changes which is the main goal of this new model of a library. It’s a hub for communication and exchange of information between people.
The program is based on the possibilities to communicate and their relationship between each of them. All functions are connected through a big void and the flexible space around it.
It houses reading spaces, seminar rooms, lecture areas, research areas, multi-functional activity rooms, an exhibition area, a kids area, a games area, a café, bar and relaxing areas, as well as a big new outdoorspace for the people of Copenhagen by the water.
The design creates a dynamic connection between physical spaces, new technologies, library facilities and the users.
It communicates with the surrounding through the semitransparent façade, as well through the open space which connects the outside area with the inside of the building.
The library should not only be a solution for the future but also adopt new upcoming technologies, media devices and workflows. It is not only a place where one can work in silent rooms. With a big selection of different areas, it also offers the users the possibility to study and work in the surrounding they like best.
