The project consists in the extension of Li Gong Villa in the Shunyi district of Beijing. The architecture of the whole compound, in a pseudo European style doesn't have much interest and we decided to work on a completely different architecture, which is going to respect the existing buildings by its volumetry but also going to express its contemporaneity through its architecture.
The extension takes its foundation on the former courtyard of the house and counts 3 levels. In order to keep the natural sunlight flowing to the basement, we had the idea to create a totally transparent glass box.
The small swimming-pool of the basement is extended of ten meters in the covered courtyard and enjoy natural light and view on the sky. The rest of the program is then settled in another glass box floating onto the pool. This box , smaller than the exterior envelope allows to locate vertical circulations and vegetation to grow from the basement to the whole height of the building. From the office we have the perception of a glass wall surrounded by vegetation giving a feeling of levitation and immersion in the nature.
On the third floor the glass box is dilated to the east and comes on the top of the existing garage to create a totally transparent living room flooded with sunlight. On the other side the levitating glass box hosts the worship room surrounded by profuse vegetation creating a real feeling of serenity.
The extension appears as a box in a box, a complex intertwining of volumes creating a feeling of lightness and interesting experience while circulating.
