Lexington Market is one of Baltimore’s most beloved cultural destinations and greatest revitalization stories in the making. Originally incepted in 1782 and erected in 1803, Lexington Market is one of the country’s oldest and longest-running public markets. Early in the project both BCT Design Group and Seawall agreed the outcome must promote healthy
lifestyles, honor the history of the market, and celebrate the diversity of the community. In tribute to the three sheds that once stood on the site, a contemporary barn-shed form will grace the site. The 1980’s arcade
will make way for a new public plaza with feature stairs and pocket parks along the site’s steep slope.
Once inside, the lower level offers patrons access to a new ‘fresh
market’, maintaining the crucial grocer component for the surrounding community. The upper level opens to a plethora of culinary and cultural backgrounds, offering a diverse selection of prepared foods. Finally, the
area directly above the ‘fresh market’ is a dedicated community space available for meetings, special events, and even weddings.
